bishop perry tillis: in times like these (mississippi)

bishop perry tillis in times like these mississippi records

oof.  like some old electrified gospel slide blues ghost record, cracked and hallucinated, ubervisioned into existence by all those mangled cassette tape bastards doing the rounds.  echoes of echoes of echoes of rererecordings.  a washington phillips reboot (that’s quite the popular term these days…) by the skaters?  or like those old folkandblues 78’s reimagined via the c40 manipulators.

the lp’s a cherrypicked selection from a mammoth collection of self recorded tapes found after tillis’ death.  recorded via diy multitracking by overdubbing between two tape recorders, creating hissy overdriven geetar and vox accompaniments to, well, himself.

feels like it came from another age (sounds like it too) but in fact recorded in the main during the decade before his death in 2004.

bottle-necking six string throbs and amoaning vocal exorcisations (he was known for his channeling and angelic communication) make it all a rather unique artifact.  in much the same way as the washington phillips reissue on this very same label.  a sense of the outer, the otherworldly.  fairly different from yr average blooze stylings anyways.

usual limited run, tip-on jacket, mississippi rules apply.  like everything else they’ve released i dig this mightily.

this video from the best church service ever…
